It lasted until the annexation of Korea by Japan in August 1910. Emperor Gojong oversaw the partial modernization of the military, economy, land system, education system, and various industries. Japan became wary of Korea's modernization attempt under Russian influence, and after the assassination of the Resident-General Itō Hirobumi, decided to directly annex Korea.
